Best Dog Parks in San Francisco

Aside from its favorable weather and charming views, San Francisco ranks #1 in the country when it comes to dog-friendly cities.

The number of dog parks and dog-friendly shopping and restaurants can not be topped. Here, we’ve put together a list of the top ten dog parks in San Francisco.

1. Golden Gate Dog Park Training Area

Golden Gate Dog Park recently reopened after an extensive remodel and has become one of the city’s most popular dog parks. There is an area at the entrance of Fulton St. and 38th Ave where you can take your dog off leash. The park also has four other off leash areas.

This fenced in park boasts both a fake grass area as well as an open sand space for dogs to play. This clean park also has both a large dog and small dog area with double gated entrances.

There are huge running distances as well as trails for walking and strolling.  Parking is ample, though it may be difficult during peak hours.

2. Mission Bay Dog Park

Mission Bay Dog Park is just minutes away from various neighborhoods. This San Francisco dog park has tree islands in between the gravel and grass area towards the back.

There are poop bags and trash cans near both entrances. People can relax on the benches and tables at this play destination for dogs. This well-maintained park also has dog water fountains.

3. Stern Grove Dog Park

Stern Grove is a beautiful park that is wheelchair accessible and stroller friendly. Locals say it’s a great place to go especially when it’s raining. There is a path for people to stay on and not get muddy like Fido. 

Stern Grove is practical with water fountains for both dogs as well as their owners. This safe park has lots of space to roam, hike or relax. The park is well maintained with ample parking. 

4. Lafayette Dog Park 

Located at the south east corner of Lafayette Park, this partially fenced in dog park is well maintained. There is a comfortable clean dog run with artificial turf which is soft on little paws.

There is water for dogs as well as plenty of garbage cans. Lafayette has beautiful views but be mindful of the limited parking.

5. Upper Douglas Dog Play Area

People boast that Upper Douglas is one of the best dog parks in San Francisco. This city park used to be a baseball field so it’s a very large enclosed area that is totally fenced in.

Trails lead up behind home plate for a beautiful view of downtown. The large flat grass field is bordered by a steep retaining wall. There is also a nice section with woodchip mulch.

6. Rincon Hill Dog Park

Rincon Hill Dog Park, located in the South Market District, is an off leash dog area that is open for public use. The park offers two fenced in sections for small and large dogs, as well as water stations and benches for relaxing. This large park relies on neighborhood donations to keep it maintained. The park also has waste baskets and poop disposal bins.

7. Walter Haas Dog Park 

This park is great for small and friendly dogs. The park is all turf so it’s soft on feet. It has a water fountain for the dogs, which is great on a hot day. There is ample parking. Walter Haas Park is in a great location and it can tend to get crowded.

8. St. Mary’s Dog Park

This dog park has some of the best views of the city at night. It is also warm and sunny during the day. This grassy fenced area is complete with benches and paved paths for people. There is also a doggie water fountain. St. Mary’s is also a great park for families that is well maintained.

9. Joby’s Dog Run Area

This well maintained dog park is conveniently located in Noe Valley right next to the rec center. There is a gravel surface. Filled with friendly people, Joby’s is a great neighborhood place.

10. McLaren Park Geneva Dog Play Area

McLaren Dog Park features two off leash areas for play. The main one is nestled between Shelley Drive Loop and Mansell Ave and boasts almost 60 acres of natural area and trails.

The smaller area for puppy play is near the Community Garden and Crocker Amazon Athletic Fields. The eucalyptus log in the middle of the park is great for agility training. The park is not enclosed.
